Composer's Notes: "Summer 2001, I moved to Harlem finding affordable housing. East 18th street had become too expensive. The bustling neighborhood I moved into contrasted the staid, quiet east 18th street. The salsa and the meringue roared from windows and cars. Dominoes were played by groups of men on a sidewalk table. Fire hydrants illegally opened gushed water to cool the heat, and wash passing cars. Gun shots fired into the air at night as a form of entertainment, like the saloons of the old west. I wasn't in Kansas anymore. A sonata for piano from the life of this neighborhood tempted me.
