The Creative Processes of Music Composition: Introduction

staff3

"The Creative Processes of Music Composition” is a website designed to serve as a music resource and instructional tool to provide up-to-date information on research and study of the creative processes involved in music composition. Ultimately these can serve as preliminary building blocks which constitute guiding principles embodied in the stricter and more concise processes and methods of this area of music creation.

It is hoped that individuals who are striving to be composers or songwriters who visit the website will add to their existing knowledge and better comprehend the subtleties of the natural and the nurtured aspects of their individual gift and abilities. They may be aided in this undertaking by studying the creative processes of esteemed and reputable composers such as Aaron Copland, Paul Hindemith, Mozart, Beethoven as well as other lesser known but successful composers.

Due to potential copyright issues, samples of the aforementioned composer’s music will not be contained on the website and analysis of their processes will be based on biographical and autobiographical journals and publications. Where appropriate, links to other sites containing samples of their music will be utilized. Only those who have agreed in writing to be contributors to the website will have samples of their compositions contained herein.

What is being initiated at this time is just the genesis of a continuing and ongoing process and a website that will be maintained and modified as our understanding of the creative processes of music composition increases or new techniques and practices are researched, recognized and established. The website will strive to provide assistance in this learning process without regard to a person’s locale, as long as they have access to a computer. The only prerequisite is that users should have a basic understanding of music and preferably some familiarization with music notation.
